Chronology of cameras Beck R J

This model appears to be a Frena No. 22. According to most sources, this model of camera dates from 1898. It had a swan-neck changing handle until 1909 when it was replaced with a straight handle. This is an imposing camera: more than 30 cm long and weighing 1.6 kg!

The origin of the name "Frena" is uncertain, with some citing "For Rapidly Exposing Negatives Automatically" or a mixture of the "Faro" card game using an automatic card dealing device and "Crena" meaning notched. Indeed the Frena of this type uses a film-pack where the sheet films are notched and separated by cardboard plates also notched but offset. The principle of the film advancement mechanism is described in detail on two other pages of the site concerning the Frena.  it is the attractive handle on the side of the camera which contains a spirit level. The Frena 22 film-packs featured 40 exposures. An arrow pointing towards a dial which rotates with the advancement of the film constitutes the view counter; this can be seen in the photo of the film holder and advance mechanism below.

The lens is normally a Single Achromat opening at f 11 (unverified). The apertures have values from 8 to 256 (in powers of 2). They are adjusted by the lever that moves within the slot under the lens. The round button just above cocks the shutter (rotating clockwise).

In theory there is no adjustment of the distances. A system in front of the objective made it possible to attach additional lenses.

The speeds (1/5, 1/10, 1/20, 1/40) are adjusted by a toothed wheel located in a hatch at the bottom of the front face.

The viewfinders are very bright and protected by sun visors.

The mechanics are excellent (it still works), the shapes of the front are very elegant as well as the fasteners between the front and the back.

In 1854, two brothers, Richard and Joseph Beck, renamed their London-based optics and microscope company to R & J Beck Ltd after the withdrawal of their third partner, James Smith. The production of cameras began in 1880, and it was in 1892 that the Frena models with their unique system of a notched-edge roll film magazine were introduced.
